The scientific worldview holds that psychology provides self-knowledge and physics describes reality. However, there is a long tradition of an alternative worldview. That alternative worldview may be called “the mystic paradigm.” The mystic theory of Self has profound implications for self-realization. The mystic theory of reality is not incompatible with modern physics. This lesson explores the idea of “self” implied by a tradition extending from the ancient Upanishads and the Torah to New Thought and pioneers of quantum physics. Rev. James Gaither, Th.D., is semi-retired but does some guest speaking and is an adjunct professor for Holos Seminary, Unity Urban Ministerial School, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. James was ordained a Unity Minister in 1979, has a M.A. in Philosophy and Doctorate in Theology. He has taught in Unity Ministerial and Spiritual Education for over 30 years and has been Minister in Unity churches for over 12 years. He was Eric Butterworth’s successor in New York City. The New York ministry named him “Pastor Emeritus.” Jim has also served as President of Holos University Graduate Seminary and Director of Academic and Student Affairs for Unity Worldwide Spiritual Institute. He has been a regular contributor to Unity Magazine for over 35 years. He has published two books: The Essential Charles Fillmore and The Hidden Realm of God: the Historical Jesus & His Healing Philosophy. In addition, Jim was co-host of one of Unity. FM’s first weekly internet radio programs. He is a recipient of the “Charles Fillmore Award for Visionary Leadership” from Unity Worldwide Ministries.
