What People Get Wrong about “Non-resistance” The teaching of “non-resistance” attributed to Jesus has been completely misunderstood since at least the 4th century. When we examine the meaning of Jesus’ teaching for his audience in the context of their time and conditions it becomes clear that he did not teach passive submission to “evil.” Rather, Jesus suggested clever strategies of nonviolent action to “turn the tables” on oppression. He suggested new ways to respond spiritually to insults, assault, and political oppression. At a deeper level the teaching helps us find inner peace and access spiritual power. Rev.
